How a Summer Program Sparked a Movement

It started with a simple idea: give kids a fun, hands-on way to try fruits and vegetables—and send them home with fresh produce every week.

The Food Is Health summer program, featured by FOX 13 News and ABC Action News, brought together AdventHealth, the University of Florida, and Dube’s Mobile Market to reach hundreds of children across Pinellas and Pasco Counties. Each week, kids got to taste new fruits and veggies, learn about healthy eating, and bring home produce bundles to share with their families.

“When you bring produce and the kids are excited about it, that just feels so good,” said Nichole Dube. “It gives you the energy to keep going.”

And she did keep going.

This early success helped inspire the creation of Access to Fresh, our nonprofit built to expand food access, nutrition education, and community-powered health. What began as a seasonal program is now a growing network of year-round initiatives, from mobile markets to workforce development and farm-to-family partnerships.

We believe fresh food should be part of every child’s life—not just in the summer.
